Why A Local Insurance Agent In this day of 800 numbers and instant internet insurance quotes, people often ask me: Why do local insurance agents continue to do so well? Shouldn't they have gone the way of the dinosaur--or the caveman--by now. If anything, local insurance agents seem to be more popular than ever.
As an agent I used to wonder why people continued to phone me. It seemed that the TV and radio were both full of cool ads that were much hipper than I was. And yet the fact was my phone continued to ring. The answer came on a Tuesday evening a few years back as I was sitting across the kitchen table with a young couple.
They'd just had their second child--their toddler was still in diapers--and over the past hour we'd covered term life insurance and a disability policy. I'd also quoted them on how they would save some real money every month if they moved their auto over to my company at the same time they took out the life plans.
The woman looked at me and thanked me for taking the time to explain all the different insurance options. "Everybody else just wanted to get me off the phone after about ten minutes," she said. You took the time to listen.
Taking the time to listen. I guess that's what really does set a local insurance agent apart. Hey, I live in this town. I go to church with clients, see their kids at Little League. I can't just rush them into deciding their future into ten quick minutes on the phone when their future is at stake.
Because it is. Every time a young family asks me about a homeowner's insurance policy or whenever a business owner sits down and discuss his options for protecting his business with the right insurance plan, I know that they are trusting their future to my judgement and my experience.
And to my integrity.
And I know I'll do my best not to let them down.
Maybe that's why people continue to call us local agents.
